I expect that Ricks is in custody. I demand to see my wife the moment we enter the embassy, but things aren’t going as expected.

We’ve been notified by our team that Penelope managed to escape on her own. Now I’m sitting in a room with a member of the ambassador’s staff, a woman named Eliza Anderson, and two Mexican Federal investigators.

“What is this about?” I don’t care about keeping my voice low either. “Daniel Ricks abducted my wife. I want to see her now, and I want to have a talk with him.”

I don’t share what Nick, Colette and I have talked about in private, but I assume they can give me a few minutes after I’ve spent some time with Penelope. It’s not like they don’t know who I am.

“Ms. Forbes, please,” Anderson tries to placate me. I’m not in the mood. “The reason why we brought you here first is that we need to be on the same page. Under no circumstances can you speak to Mr. Ricks.”

“And why is that?”

I glare at one of the investigators, knowing that she’s about to roll her eyes at me. Nick’s promises have been premature. Here, we don’t have the power to make things move faster.

The woman investigator takes over.

“Because you don’t want to interfere with a months long investigation that finally got us proof Mr. Ricks has been bribing a member of the local police force. Ms. Elliot’s abduction definitely complicated things, but since that is resolved now, I’d prefer we finish what we started as planned.”

“What’s going to happen to him?” I ask. “Do you even know who he is? He shot his own daughter, damn it. It wasn’t the first time he had threatened me or my family. I have reason to believe he was involved in a fire at one of my warehouses as well.”

“And your statement is extremely valuable, to us, and our counterparts in your country,” the other investigator says. “We’ll get rid of a corrupt official, and we’ll deal with Mr. Ricks first, then your authorities can get their hands on him.”

It sounds like a plan. A plan by the book. Colette is sitting next to me—I can feel the relief radiating off of her in waves. Is it going to end like this? Ricks has gotten away with his crimes so many times. If they lock him up for good this time, I’m willing to step back. If not…There’s always a plan B.

“I hear you. We keep our heads down, go back home unless you need us for anything.”

No one blinks at my tone that’s a bit sharper and more sarcastic than I intended it to be. Sue me. I’m tired.

“I’m glad we have an understanding,” Ms. Anderson, the embassy official tells me. “Let’s go see Ms. Elliot now.”

It’s about damn time.

* * * *

My anger melts away when I finally get to hold her, leaving room for an emotion I can’t give in to as long as we’re still among strangers.

“I’m so glad you’re here,” she whispers, holding on tightly.
